Chapter Twenty
I donât know if itâs the witch in her or whether she just has nerves of freaking steel, but I swear she looks as cool as anything in her black boots and leather jacket, striding towards this big old warehouse. I, on the other hand ⦠well. Maybe itâs the fact that Iâve spent this whole journey concealing a nine-inch, wooden stake inside the lining of my jacket. Obviously, I canât let Rey know about it, so she naturally assumes my nervousness is all about the Blood Bank.
âItâll be fine,â she says. âThereâs always a member of the VC there to oversee things. Just follow my lead. Let me do all the talking.â
âDo you think theyâll search us before weâre allowed in?â
âSearch us? Why?â
âI donât know. Maybe make sure we donât have any weapons on us or anything?â
I keep looking straight forwards as I speak. She pulls up.
âNaz,â she says, accusingly.
âWhat?â
âDonât make me regret this.â
âIâm just asking, thatâs all.â
I resist the urge to place my hand on the concealed stake. It should be fairly straight forward to plough it through a dead sternum. And Iâd be lying if I said I hadnât practised. At some point, someone is going to move the wardrobe in my old flat and think I was rehearsing for a remake of the Shawshank Redemption.
It's taken us almost an hour to get here. Even if Rey had relented and given me directions, I doubt Iâd have been able to find it on my own. The storage park weâve arrived at is just a short train ride from Wimbledon, but it's a world away from grassy tennis courts and strawberries and cream. The buildings are clad with corrugated iron and have tin roofs. Rusted fence posts stand guard, broken chains dangling. You can tell itâs the type of place that always looks grey. Even in daylight. There are about a dozen cars parked on the oil-stained tarmac. Less than half of them look like they would actually be drivable. Mixed among them are a few caravans, propped up on bricks, with silhouettes moving at the windows.
This is definitely a place youâd avoid on a dark night. The type of place youâd avoid at any time of day, in fact. Yet weâre walking towards it.
âAre you sure this is it?â I ask, currently feeling strangely grateful that my first conventional vampire experience was in a luxury flat in Mayfair. Somehow, I donât think Iâd have been quite so willing to take Joannaâs place and come here on my own. Fortunately, Iâm not on my own. Reyâs with me and she knows what sheâs doing. At least, she looks like she does.
âDonât worry,â she says. âI know what you're thinking. Itâs not much further now.â
âBut itâs here? In a storage park?â
âI donât know exactly, but this is where we dropped the blood off.â
Something has been bothering me about this whole Blood Bank thing. Something Iâve been wanting to ask her all night, but given that weâve been on public transport and surrounded by people the whole time, Iâve not really had a chance.
